The International Scholarship Programme (ISP) of the Aga Khan Foundation offers a chance for exceptional scholars from specific countries to pursue postgraduate education when they lack alternative funding. Created in 1969 by His Highness the Aga Khan, the ISP has assisted over 1,000 students so far.
Each year, the Aga Khan Foundation offers a restricted number of scholarships for postgraduate studies to exceptional students from developing countries who don’t have access to other funding options. These scholarships follow a 50% grant: 50% loan model and are awarded through a competitive annual application process.
This International Scholarship application is open for Master’s level courses but is willing to consider applications for Ph.D. programmes in any reputable university or postgraduate institution of higher learning who are Nationals of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Canada*, Egypt, France*, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Portugal*, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda and the USA.
ONGOING SCHOLARSHIP: Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program
Scholarship Coverage/Duration:
The Aga Khan Foundation provides support for tuition fees and living expenses only, excluding travel costs. For Master’s programs, scholarships cover the entire duration of the degree course. However, for PhD programs, funding is provided only for the first two years, after which students are expected to secure alternative financial aid.

Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for an AKF ISP award, you must:
- Possess outstanding academic credentials Possess a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent training/professional experience Demonstrate genuine financial need
- Create a well-considered, credible, multi-source funding plan** Secure admission to a respected postgraduate institution
- Exhibit strong leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular and/or entrepreneurial accomplishments, and volunteer contributions.
Note: Preference is given to young professionals under 30 years of age.

Application Details:
The application cycle will commence in January 2024. Applicants are advised to get in touch with local offices for specific deadline dates and requirements, as these may vary by country. Completed applications should be submitted to the respective agency from which the form was obtained, not to Geneva. The deadline for application submission is March 17, 2023; however, in some countries, internal deadlines may be earlier.
